One night not long ago I was driving down a dark, unlit, lonely highway I’d never travelled before. There was one other car in sight, ahead of me and travelling slowly.

As I moved to the left to pass the slow moving car, I felt a deep sense of dread. Like something awful was about to happen. That dark feeling decreased as I passed the car and sped off into the moonless night.

If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember a popular song titled the same as today’s article, “I’m Looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover.”

I grew up in a small farm town on the shores of Lake Erie in Western New York State. Many of my large family lived in the same neighborhood. One of my favorite aunts, Lucy, lived next door to us.

Occasionally some folks question or criticize Spirit’s and my approach to life, which basically is: Seek only joy. Some typical responses:

“That’s too simple – too easy.”
“Life is just plain tough–you know, ‘no pain, no gain.’”
“Look around you–there’s precious little joy in this world.”
“You guys are burying your heads in the sand.”

And so on.

Or as one of my family once put it during a difficult time in her life, “Life’s a bitch, and then you die!”
