A few weeks ago, I was jogging up in the foothills south of my home. It was a
typically beautiful Wyoming summer morning after a rainy night -- clear blue
sky, a few puffy white clouds, and a cool breeze bearing the intoxicating scent
of sagebrush still wet with raindrops. But my mind was elsewhere, on the
newsletter I had to publish later that morning.
As I was working on the newsletter after jogging, my mind began wandering
back to the foothills where I had been earlier that morning. I lost my focus on
the newsletter, and before I knew it, many minutes had flown by.
Chief Joseph has often talked about being fully present in our lives -- being
in the moment, living now.
These past couple of months, I’ve been carefully observing myself. And I’ve
come to a startling and unsettling conclusion: Often, when I’m in the middle
of doing something, my mind is somewhere else. Instead of being fully in the
present moment, I’m off in the past or the future.
Maybe you’ve noticed the same thing in yourself.
What startled me so much was how much of my life was passing me by, almost
literally without me.
Recently I read Ram Dass’ book, Be Here Now. The title was so
striking to me, it started me on this little journey of self-rediscovery. I was
finally realizing how important it is to be here now, to be fully awake in every
present moment. I was losing my ability to do that, and it was damned scary!
We miss so much of the joy of life by not living fully in the now.
Here’s Chief Joseph.

One of the biggest challenges for most of you is
being fully present in every moment of your lives.
You live in a world filled to overflowing with
distractions, many of them deeply disturbing to many of you. We are not
criticizing or judging your modern world or your world cultures. But we are
saying it does not benefit you to, shall we say, "buy into" the mass
consciousness.
It’s the easiest thing in the world to get
sucked into this mass consciousness of despair, disaster, and desperation. And
yet it serves no one well -- not you, not your loved ones, not anyone in your
life, or in the world.
It is not always easy to stand on your own
ground. That is, to insist and persist in following your own path. But when you
do, you will make a huge difference. A difference not only in your own life, but
in the lives of all those around you, in the lives of every being in the entire
Universe, in the life of all that is.
One individual standing alone in her/his own
power is a far greater force than millions and millions mired in the muck of the
mass consciousness. One person, friends, standing alone, is that powerful when
he/she is fully connected to that higher self they truly are.
When you stand in this place of connectedness
and alignment, you are more powerful than all the legions of armies, navies,
governments that have ever existed on your planet.
And all that power you have within you exists only
in this present moment -- only in your now. All your power is now!
One person standing in the power of his/her now,
is paving the way, if you will, for the many who will follow. You are making it
easier and easier for them to, as it were, follow in your footsteps.
But you can do this, you can fully exercise your
great personal power only when you live in the present moment. Only when
you, as Ram Dass’ book title says, can be here now.
Be here now, friends. Now is all you have. And
when you’re fully here now, you will know -- and feel -- your power.
And you will know and feel your influence, your
positive influence on all beings in your physical dimensions, and in these
nonphysical dimensions where we in spirit exist.
Be here now. Now is all you have.

Since 1992, John Cali has been communicating with a
non-physical entity called Joseph. In one of his many physical lifetimes, this
spirit was incarnated as the legendary Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe in
what is now the state of Oregon in the northwestern USA. These messages are a
blend of information from Joseph, other spirits in the "Joseph group,"
and John.
John can be reached by email here
or through their website
Private readings with Chief Joseph are available here: http://www.greatwesternpublishing.org/readings.html
