I have a good friend I’ve known many
years. He’s incredibly successful in his profession, and has an
international reputation for excellence. He’s got nearly
everything many people only dream about -- work he loves, a
beautiful loving wife, wonderful children, the house of his dreams,
a seemingly endless flow of money, and more.
What’s wrong with this picture? Nothing, except . . .
John Cali
Nothing except Joe (not his real name) hasn’t yet found much
happiness in his life, despite all his worldly success.
Joe is a complainer, often looking for something
"wrong," especially in his work colleagues. He’s
compiled a list of all the "wrong-doers" in his
profession, and he relentlessly criticizes them, publicly and
privately.
This resistance to what is has caused Joe much stress, and the
stress has created various physical disorders. Joe is still a young
man, but his health is that of what you’d associate with an ailing
elderly man.
Here’s Chief Joseph.
Chief Joseph
You’ve heard it said money is the root of all evil. That’s
not true, of course, as most of you know.
But we’ll tell you what is the root of all evil -- or,
at least, the root of all you consider "evil." That’s resistance.
Resistance permeates and pollutes the lives of people like Joe. No
amount of worldly success can erase it. It brings, as John pointed
out with Joe, unhappiness, stress, illness. It can ultimately result
in physical death, as it often does.
Friends, if you could erase resistance from the face of your
planet, all the ills of your society would vanish in a heartbeat.
Resistance is the cause of not only physical illness, but also
wars, poverty, epidemics, and all the other maladies you want to rid
your world of.
The root of resistance is fear. It’s that simple. When you have
a society, or an entire world, living in fear, and the resulting
pain that fear produces, you’re going to have lots of resistance.
No one has a monopoly on resistance. You find it not just in
individual humans, but even "institutionalized," if you
will, in governments, nations, religions, schools, and so on.
The fact you can wage war, condemn others of different races or
religions, commit horrible crimes against one another is positive
proof of fear running rampant in your society. All of these things
would be eliminated if you gave up your resistance.
So what’s the key to giving up resistance? What’s the
solution?
The key, the solution are simple, though not necessarily easy for
a society so entrenched in fear.
The answer, of course, is love.
Love of yourselves, love of others, love of all that is. God,
whatever you perceive him or her to be, loves all of you. We define
love as the choice to see the divinity in all beings, in all that
is, whether you consider it animate or inanimate.
Everything that exists carries within itself that divine spark.
Everything is part of God. Everything is God. Including you.
Seeing your lives from the perspective of love will bring you an
exhilarating sense of release, freedom, and joy. It will help you
let go of your resistance and fear forever.
Love is the answer. Hold love in one hand and fear in the other.
Then choose one. But choose wisely.
