The Sense of Sin
As a former Roman Catholic from a large
Italian family, still mostly Catholic, I read with great interest a
recent Washington Post article on the Vatican.
John Cali
The Vatican recently decided to go public with one of its most
secret tribunals, the 800-year-old Apostolic Penitentiary. This
tribunal handles cases of sin the church considers so grave only the
pope can grant absolution.
It seems Catholics the world over, including mainly Catholic
Italy, the Vatican’s home turf, are increasingly ignoring the
sacrament of penance.
For those who may not know what that is, a priest, after hearing
a person’s confession of their sins, then assigns a penance and
grants absolution. According to church doctrine, this is almost the
only way Catholics can be forgiven their sins.
Apparently the Vatican’s motive in removing the shroud of
secrecy from the Apostolic Penitentiary is to encourage Catholics to
confess their sins more often.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, second-in-command at the Vatican, said
"Today it seems the sense of sin has been forgotten."
That may well be, but I’m not so sure that’s a bad thing.
Here’s Chief Joseph.
Chief Joseph
The sense of sin has been instilled in most of you since infancy,
whether you’re Roman Catholic or not. You’ve been raised to
believe you are less than worthy, less than deserving, less than
lovable. In fact, according to Catholic doctrine, all humans are
born with so-called "original sin."
So you’ve been tainted and marked from the day you emerged from
your mothers’ wombs!
That, friends, is complete nonsense! It has never been
true. It will never be true. You were all born pure and
godlike. You are God, as you’ve heard us say many times
over the years.
How can God be a sinner?
And what is "sin" anyway?
It’s whatever the "powers that be" define it as
being. And you humans buy it, as you say, "hook, line, and
sinker." That’s the mass consciousness -- do what
"they" tell us. "They" know best.
Again, that’s nonsense. Or to put it in your blunt,
less-than-polite language, it’s bullshit!
We don’t want to go into this in detail today, but we will say
the whole idea of sin was foisted upon you as an attempt to control
and manipulate you. And it’s largely succeeded.
Friends, we want you to forget about sin. It doesn’t exist. You
are not born tainted with "original sin." You will never
be punished in hell. There is no hell greater than the one you
inflict upon yourselves in this lifetime.
You are all God/Goddess. You are good. You are worthy. You are
loved.
We love you. When you love yourselves as we love you, you will
never again have "the sense of sin."
