What Do You Do?

I'm on the board of directors of a local community service organization. Last week at our regular board meeting we were chatting before the meeting started. The chat turned out to be more interesting than the meeting itself.

Besides being on the board of directors, I also write and publish the organization's newsletter. But I've been so busy lately I've missed a few publishing deadlines. So the other board members wondered why, out loud, and rightly so.

I told them I'd been very busy with my work. "Well, what do you do?" they asked. I'd never talked to them about my work.

"Well," I said, "I'm a freelance writer." And they said, "What do you write about?"

So I told them, point-blank. There was a collective gasp.

I love my town. I love Wyoming. I love these people. But they are in no way close to me in their beliefs and values. Wyoming is basically a republican, Christian, conservative place. Nothing wrong with that. It's just not my way.

My point is they wondered what I do. They didn't ask who I am.

That, to me, points out clearly a huge issue among us humans on the planet today. What we do is more important than who we are. Yet my truth is the opposite of that.

Here's Chief Joseph.

You live in an action-oriented world. As John said, your society considers what you do far more important than who you are.

You are all divine beings of light and love who have come to this lifetime for a purpose. That purpose does not include amassing millions of dollars, power, influence, material possessions. Nothing wrong with any of that. But it is not your reason for being in this lifetime.

Friends, you didn't come to do anything. You came to be who you are.

You came to be the shining light of your soul. To focus that light, laser-like, into the parts of your world that appear dark. The dark is not evil. You all deal with the dark parts of yourselves. The dark is simply those places where you have not yet let in the light.

You don't need us to remind you there are plenty of places and people needing to let in the light.

What you do is far less important than who you are. In being your true selves, fully aligned with your soul selves, you are a shining bright beacon for all the world. That light is reflected and radiated in all you do.

And what you do is always filled with light and love if you're coming from that powerful place within.

It doesn't matter what you do, from the most menial tasks to work of earth-shaking importance. It doesn't matter if you're the president of the United States or if you're the janitor who cleans up the White House.

You are all equal, not necessarily in abilities or skills, but in the fundamental goodness of your beings.

If you're aligned with your soul selves, your light is shining through, uplifting and healing all those whose lives you touch.

It's not what you do. It's who you are that matters. Next time you meet someone don't say, "What do you do?" Say instead "Who are you? Tell me about yourself."
