Self-Esteem Revisited
How do you feel about yourself? I mean everything
about you, especially your physical body. Good or bad or somewhere
in-between?
Chief Joseph and I have talked about self-esteem before, most
recently in this
article. It's obvious that many -- probably including
ourselves, at least at one time or another -- suffer from low
self-esteem. It's one of the worst causes of human misery on this
planet today.
A Gallup poll reports 2 out of 3 Americans suffer from low
self-esteem. That's almost a whopping 70 percent of the population!
And I'm sure Americans have no monopoly on low self-esteem.
So we've decided to revisit the subject in today's article, and
have included a revised repeat of what Joseph said in our earlier
article.
Many years ago Wayne
Dyer told a wonderful true story about self-esteem.
He was counseling a married woman nearing middle age. She had really
low self-esteem, and her husband wasn't helping her any.
Wayne described the husband as this super-macho guy who'd jog
home from his vasectomy. Just to give you an idea. (He sounds like
some of the guys I know out here in Wyoming.)
The woman was extraordinarily beautiful and had a gorgeous body.
But she couldn't see any of that.
So in one of their sessions, Wayne told her he wanted her to go
home after the session, take off all her clothes, and stand in front
of a full-length mirror. He instructed her to simply look at all
sides of her body in the mirror. He wanted her to admire, love, and
appreciate her body, to see how beautiful she really was.
(I'm paraphrasing below, as I don't recall the exact dialogue.)
So she did as Wayne suggested. While she was standing in front of
the mirror completely naked, her husband walks in. "What in the
hell are you doing?" he demanded.
"I saw Dr. Dyer today," she replied, "and he told
me to do this, so I can see how beautiful my body is, and appreciate
and admire every part of it."
"And what did he say about your 40-year-old ass?" her
husband sneered.
She instantly shot back "Well, your name didn't even come up
today."
She was obviously well on her way to greater self-esteem.
Here's Chief Joseph.
Chief
Joseph
Your modern society gives you mixed messages about esteem for
yourselves and others. You are generally taught to have great esteem
for your parents, your spouses, your churches, your schools, your
governments, etc. But rarely are you taught to have equal esteem for
yourselves.
That is the mass consciousness. Many humans have bought into it.
So you have a world filled with old souls struggling with their
human experiences. As your planet experiences more and more changes,
sometimes literally earth-shaking, self-esteem is often one of the
casualties.
There is no way you can live the life of your dreams if you buy
into the mass consciousness. There's no way you can live the life of
your dreams if you are not the person of your dreams.
It all comes down to love. Love, pure and simple. If you love
yourselves, esteem yourselves, you will return to the vision, the
dream your higher selves have for you, the human aspects of
themselves.
You live in a tough world. But not so tough you cannot navigate
through it. Though tough enough -- diverse enough -- to give you
some interesting experiences and opportunities for growth.
You are not here to suffer, although many of you have chosen to
suffer. You are not here to live in lack, although many of you have
chosen that too. You are not here to be depressed, although many of
you follow that path.
You are here to realize you are at the end of thousands of years
of self-imposed limitation. You are here to grow, to expand. And to
do it all in joy.
All is well.
