In a recent interview Chief Joseph said, "Dying is the easiest thing you will ever do." A
startling statement for many of us.
Our Articles

I've been pondering this issue a long time, and I'd like your opinion.

Some of you tell me you like our articles short, quick and easy to read. With only the odd exception, that describes most of our articles. Others of you tell me you'd prefer more longer articles.

If you're like me, you value your time and spend it only on those things that mean the most to you. There's far more information available on the internet than I can possibly read, even the stuff I enjoy.

I subscribe to many newsletters, including some similar to this one. But the ones I pay the most attention to are the short, quick-and-easy-to-read ones. Which is why I've kept this newsletter that way.

So I want to know what you, our readers, think. Do you like the short articles or do you prefer longer ones?

Please let me know what you think. You don't need to give me your reasons, only whether you like it short or longer.

Send me an email here.

Then, in the body of the email, just type "Short" or "Longer" (without the quotes), and send it off to me.

Thanks very much for your help with this.

Publishing Day Change

About five years ago, I moved to Cody, Wyoming. It's a friendly little mountain town in the western USA. Like many other writers, I live a pretty reclusive life. So I didn't get involved with the community. As much as I love it here, I was a stranger in a strange land.

About a year ago, I decided to change that, and joined a local community service organization. At my first meeting, they asked me to write their weekly newsletter. I agreed.

Doing the newsletter is a lot of fun, and it's helped me to better know the community and all the wonderful folks here. The newsletter, however, has to be published every Wednesday, the same day we've been publishing this newsletter.

Publishing two newsletters the same day every week has become a daunting challenge for me. So beginning this week, we're changing our weekly newsletter publishing day from Wednesday to Tuesday. Please make a note of that. From now on you'll receive Chief Joseph's newsletter every Tuesday.

If you have any questions please email me.

Thanks!

April News

1) Once again, we're getting the newsletter out a day early. I'm getting ready to travel next week, for part of April and into early May. You won't be able to reach me by phone. But I will be checking and responding to email every day, as usual. And we will continue doing the newsletter every week.

2) Some of our readers were uncomfortable with, and perhaps offended by, the two prostitution articles Joseph and I recently did for Cosmic Lighthouse magazine. Other readers thought this was a subject we, as a society, need to talk about more.

While Joseph and I don't deliberately seek out controversial subjects, neither do we avoid them. We don't expect everyone to agree with us. But then, it's rare everyone agrees with us on any subject, controversial or not.

I just wanted to let all of you know we do care about your opinions and feedback on what we write. We welcome all of it, whether you agree with us or not. We appreciate it all and, most importantly, we appreciate you.

A dear friend sent me a beautiful and intriguing response to last week's newsletter, "Perfect Partners and Soul Mates."
Chief Joseph's Weekly Newsletter: God and Felix

After last week's newsletter article, "Eve of Destruction," I thought we'd do something lighter this week. If you didn't see it, "Eve of Destruction" here it is.

I grew up in a family of Sicilian immigrants in rural New York State. As you'd expect, we were all Roman Catholics. Those were the days when the Catholic Church was pretty strict and conservative. Having grown up in that era, I clearly see the positive changes in the church over the years, although I am no longer Catholic. But back then, in the church I remember, it was a pretty bleak and joyless environment. Except for Felix.
Chief Joseph's Weekly Newsletter: Eve of Destruction

Those of you in my age group probably recall Barry McGuire's hit song of the 1960s, "Eve of Destruction." The recording became a classic protest song. As Wikipedia puts it, McGuire "expressed the frustrations and fears of young people in the age of the Cold War, Vietnam, the nuclear arms race, and the civil rights movement."

Today many are expressing the same fears, but of another apocalypse -- global warming and all the other sins humans have committed against Mother Earth.
I'll be traveling tomorrow, December 19, through December 27 or 28. I'll be checking my email, but probably only once a day. So if I don't respond as quickly as I usually do, please be patient. Thanks!

I wish all of you a most blessed and beautiful holiday season, whatever you celebrate: Christmas, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Islamic New Year, Kwanzaa, the regular New Year -- sorry if I missed any.

This is truly a joy-filled season and it's a grand opportunity for us to slow down from our busy lives and spend quiet time with family, friends, and loved ones. Or to find joy in being alone in our own good company, as I'll be doing. And getting into the true spirit of giving and receiving.

Spirituality Meets Sci-Fi in Compelling New Film

The Spiritual Cinema Circle's November Feature Film: The Man from Earth

Jerome's Bixby's THE MAN FROM EARTH, a riveting and thought provoking new film, offers some startling revelations about the origins of belief. Subscribers to Spiritual Cinema Circle will receive this entrancing film as part of their November DVD collection. Go here for all the details.

THE MAN FROM EARTH stars David Lee Smith (FIGHT CLUB, ZODIAC) as John Oldman, a college history professor who retires after only 10 years of work. An impromptu goodbye party thrown by his co-workers (a stellar ensemble cast of recognizable character actors) soon turns into a prolonged interrogation surrounding his abrupt departure. Finally, Oldman admits a reality that rocks the very foundation of their belief systems. While his colleagues (Ellen Crawford of "ER," John Billengsly of OUT OF TIME, GLASS HOUSE and others) are amused by his admission, some ponder the possibility while others conspire to have him "committed." A brilliant surprise ending provides the elusive answer to his unbelievable, earth-shattering confession.

According to Spiritual Cinema Circle's Director of Acquisitions Anna Darrah, who has viewed over 2,000 films in the past four years, "This isn't a big budget picture and there are no car crashes, no sex or A-list stars, but this film will ignite your soul and awaken questions you didn't know you had. Darrah adds, "This is the kind of film that finds you in one place and leaves you in another: totally transformed on some level."

THE MAN FROM EARTH was written by Jerome Bixby, the famed American science fiction writer. He wrote FANTASTIC VOYAGE and some of the very early episodes for the STAR TREK series. THE MAN FROM EARTH was a story he had been kicking around in his head since the 1950's and it ended up being his last great work. He completed the screenplay on his deathbed in 1998.

THE MAN FROM EARTH is a featured selection in the November Spiritual Cinema Circle DVD club. Also included in this collection are two great short films and the inspiring and heart-warming documentary LAUNDRY & TOSCA.

Inspirational Dog Stories

Many of our readers have been asking us about the book of inspirational dog stories we've been working on over a year now.

Well, it's almost finished! We don't have an exact publishing date, but it will be shortly after January 1, 2008 -- about two months from now.

If you'd like to be notified when the book is available, send us an email.Once the publishing date is definite, we'll let you know all the details.

Finally, if you're curious, here's a short excerpt from the book:

I was shopping recently in a local store. Just after I arrived, one of the young ladies who works there came in with her dog. Life is pretty informal here in this little Wyoming town. As in Europe, people don't mind if you bring your dog into a store.

The dog was a tiny black bundle of fur. She was about eight or nine inches tall, and couldn't have weighed more than three or four pounds. What she lacked in size, however, she more than made up for in her boundless energy.

As soon as she spotted me, she came running up, bright eyes sparkling with joy through her thick black eyebrows. She stood on her hind legs, front paws on my knee, with a big smile on her face, tail wagging furiously. She was adorable. Obviously, she loved people. Everyone, it seemed, since she greeted each new customer in the same friendly manner.

She filled the whole store with her energy and love. People were smiling and laughing, even with other folks they didn't know.

This tiny creature instantly, magically transformed the whole place. The shift in energy was dramatic and all felt it. Their faces suddenly lit up with joy and happiness, as if they were once again little children.

Such is the power of unbridled love and joy. Dogs uplift us, make us smile, and let us know we are loved.

In Joy,
John

Spiritual Cinema Circle's September Films

                BELIEVE IN ME
This month's feature is about a young man who dreams of being an important
basketball coach in Oklahoma in the 1960's. After he is forced to take a job as the
coach of an all-girls team, he fears his short career will soon come to an end. What
happens instead is nothing short of miraculous, and the joy, laughter, tears and
friendships captured in this wonderful feature film show us how important it is to put our
faith in a higher plan, making the best of what is given to us. Starring Jeffrey Donovan,
Samantha Mathis and Bruce Dern, this is a film the whole family can enjoy.

108 minutes in English. Written and directed by Richard Collector.

September's short films include:

5 WISHES: THE CONVERSATION
Filmmaker Michael Goorjian of Illusion (Vol 5, 2007) has paired with our very own
Circle co-founder Gay Hendricks to create this insightful short film all about
relationships. It's Friday night and Michael isn't in the mood to go to another
engagement party for his friend, who, in Michael's opinion, has been married a few too
many times. And why is Michaels's own relationship feeling so restrictive these days?
Probing the depths of what it takes to find peace and comfort within ourselves and our
relationships, this short opens a door to new possibility.

17 minutes in English. Written by Gay Hendricks, directed by Michael Goorjian.

NOW YOU SEE ME, NOW YOU DON'T
This intense short film from Hungary has won awards around the world and now we
proudly bring it to our members. Though it seems like a normal day, with Alex playing
while Mom cooks in the kitchen, Dad comes home with something new from the lab and suddenly something is very wrong. Not for the faint of heart, this film conveys its
powerful message through suspense and chilling action. Stripped of its mystery and
vulnerable in its truth, this simple story reveals healing in many forms.

30 minutes, in Hungarian with English subtitles. Written and directed by Attila Szasz.

7 DAYS WITH 7 DOGS
Join our friends Billie and Andrew, the filmmakers of our very first feature film, Finding
Joy (Vol 1, 2004), as they take their furry friends a vacation of their own. No, they don't
drop them off at a doggy spa. They spend a week going from one beautiful doggy
heaven to another, treating their canine family members to a week of pure rest and
relaxation.

A short documentary about the joy that comes from giving something wonderful to the
animals you love, this film asks us to remember and celebrate our four-legged friends.

7 minutes in English. Written by Andrew Einspruch, directed by Billie Dean.

Spiritual Cinema Circle's August Films

                SNOW WALKERS
The August feature film stars Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers) with James Cromwell (Babe, The Green Mile) in this moving adventure adapted from the book by Farley Mowat and directed by veteran actor Charles Martin Smith of Touching Wild Horses (Volume 2, 2006).

It's 1953 and hotshot pilot Charlie Halliday stops on a remote island during a routine flight in the Canadian Arctic, only to get stuck with a sick Inuit girl he's agreed to drop off at a hospital on his flight home. When his plane crashes, the arrogant Halliday and ailing but self-sufficient Kanaalaq find themselves stranded in a dangerous and inhospitable land.

The friendship that blossoms from this unlikely union is the spiritual glue that binds this beautiful film together, leaving us with an understanding of the deeper purpose of life and the true meaning of love.

1) We're getting this week's newsletter out a day early, as I inadvertently over-
scheduled myself for tomorrow, our usual publishing day. Next week we'll be back to
our Wednesday schedule.

2) We're still getting complaints from our readers about occasionally not receiving our
emails on Wednesdays. I regularly run these email reminders through Lyris' spam
checker. We always come up with a score of zero. That's the best score, ten being the
worst.

So if this is happening to you, just remember to check your ISP's spam filters, and also
any spam filter you may have on your computer. You need to allow our emails through
your filters or I can't guarantee you'll receive them every Wednesday.
News From Wyoming: Chief Joseph Discussion Group

Lately we’ve had a surge in activity at our Chief Joseph Discussion Group. And on a subject that fascinates us all.

We’ve been talking about growing older, aging. Something all of us can identify with, whether we’re young, old, or somewhere in between.

The last time I looked, we had 239 members in the group. I want to see that number grow with more of you joining and, more importantly, participating regularly. We’ve got a great bunch of folks in the group. It’s a lot of fun, and a great way to connect with kindred spirits on the same path of personal and spiritual growth you are following.

So think about it. And if you have been thinking about it, but haven’t done anything, this is the time. You can sign up here.

Yellowstone National Park is one of the USA’s natural treasures. I’m blessed to be able to live at its doorstep. Although it’s certainly not as pristine as it was years ago, it’s still one of the most beautiful places on earth, in my (admittedly biased) opinion.

My good friend, Julie Sirovetz, plans to hold a prayer gathering in Yellowstone in July. If you'd like to attend, here are the details.
