If you answered “Yes” to that question, you’re not alone.
Most of my Roman Catholic family have disapproved of my spiritual path ever since I started channelling years ago. I have a great relationship with many of them. But even the ones I’m closest to have told me they pray for me so I won’t go to hell. That amuses me, and I just tell them hell doesn’t exist.
When David Thomas filmed the movie Tuning In with 5 other channels and me, my family, except for my brother, could not have cared less. Only my brother has ever seen the film.
Recently another family member, upset—enraged, really—about my spiritual path, sent me several letters. I can only describe them as venomous. That certainly ruined our relationship. I just sent her love and light, and released her to her own path.
I know many of you reading this have put yourselves out into the public eye doing your spiritual work. As you well know, there will always be someone out there willing to criticize or condemn you for your spiritual path. That’s part of “the cost of doing business” with the public.
My spirit guides often say all paths lead home, whether those paths are “spiritual” or not. I firmly believe that, even for those who deliberately strike out to hurt others.
Here are some of Spirit’s thoughts.
- There is only one person whose opinion of your spiritual path, or of you, matters. That person is you.
- If someone is unkind to you, there is only one appropriate response—be kind.
- If you always follow your heart, in your spiritual practices or any other area of your life, you will never get lost. You cannot get it wrong.
- As one of your famous writers says, “Your only obligation in any lifetime is to be true to yourself.” (Spirit is referring to Richard Bach.)
- Everyone has their own path to follow, a path orchestrated by their human and spirit selves. You have no business criticizing them for any reason.
- Instead of criticizing others for being different, simply rejoice in the diversity. If you did not have that diversity your human lives would indeed be boring.
- You have no obligation to be faithful to anyone else’s truth but your own.
- Your truth is the highest and best truth.
- Your inner guidance is your highest, best, and only authority.
- You are all God in human form. Remember that, and you will never go astray.

Hi John and all,
I used to get all excited to tell people the things I learned as I started opening up to Spirit! Then I noticed that sometimes others did not resonate with what I loved, but now I look back at that and get a good chuckle out of my enthusiasm. For awhile, it caused me concern about my ideas of enlightenment and I wondered if I was off track. (So much to learn, Grasshopper!!) Hahaha.
Over time, I realized that everyone has their own path, some crossing over happens, but we each have our own heaven. Even the ‘Masters’ have different personalities, so we just need to be and love ourselves.
Like you said, if we were all the same, it would be VERY boring! I think that most people in religions sometimes have a difficult time removing Jesus from their version of heaven and how he will iron out all their problems while they praise him. When this reality changes, it can be quite upsetting for some people to realize they are responsible for their own ‘saving’.
For me, each moment radiates who ‘I AM’ and it is immediately sent back in many ways, like the people I meet, nature, my body, my vehicle, my home, etc. Everything is a mirror back to me of how I am doing. It has taken a few years to come to this point of understanding, it has not been easy, but it is worth it! What a journey it is!

I had exactly the same kinds of reactions from folks when I was much younger and just starting on this spiritual path. It took me a while to learn, as you said, everyone has their own paths — and now that’s perfectly okay with me.
I agree with you completely — what a journey it is! Wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🙂

It’s likely important to remember the other side of the coin when someone approaches you with something like The Book of Dog (God is actually dyslexic) that they are right for themselves for at least the time being, if not for you. I so remember when I had found the solution to all the problems of the world (a cult as it turned out.) I drove far more people away than I attracted. So, be kind. I find that the best response to proselytizers is “Oh, that’s interesting. I’ll be looking into that, but not just yet.” Great article and video. Thanks again.
