Is Beauty Really In the Eye of the Beholder?

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy. ~ Anne Frank (1929-1945), Diary of a Young Girl, 1952

Well, perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all probably know at least one someone who is blind to the beauty of our world. Someone who focuses on the ugliness, which is not hard to find (if that’s what they’re looking for) in people, places, politics, etc.

Spirit

But beauty also exists quite apart from how humans see the world. Everything God or the Divine (it doesn’t matter what word you choose) created is inherently beautiful.

Here are a few ways you might consider for finding the beauty that is literally all around you.

  • As you talk with someone, particularly the ones you love, be silent and listen to them—not just with your ears, but also with your heart.
  • Take a walk in nature and notice how carefree are the birds of the air, the beasts on the ground, the fish in the water. They are not worrying about what tomorrow will bring, nor even the next moment.
  • Listen to the sounds of the wind blowing through the trees and flowers. It blows free and easy—a great role model for you.
  • Feel the sun on your skin. Let it bathe you with its warmth and love.
  • Watch the stars on a clear, cold night. See them twinkling in the sky and throughout this vast universe you call  home.
  • Watch a blood-red sunset over the horizon of a darkening sea.

We’re sure you can think of many more ways to luxuriate in the beauty of all God’s creation, of all that is. The best thing about all this is it doesn’t cost you anything except a bit of your time. And it can heal everything—we mean everything—that ails you.

As Anne Frank said in her diary, there is beauty all around us, no matter how desperate our circumstances. And her circumstances were far more desperate than most of us will ever face. In this short video, the filmmaker shows us some of the incredible beauty of this planet we all call home.

It is easy to find beauty almost everywhere. You only have to open your eyes to it.

However, when watching the video I cannot help thinking “are there no beautiful men?”. As far as I can see, there is only one man in the video, and you only see his back. There are a lot of women in the video (more or less dressed), but only one man. I don’t think that is fair to all the beautiful men out there. 😉

Thanks very much, Carin. I hadn’t noticed that, but you’re absolutely right.

You’ve reminded me of that famous song by Ray Stevens, Everything Is Beautiful. In that song, there’s a line, “everybody’s beautiful.” That, obviously includes men and women.

      Thank you, dear.

My best friend, not counting family, is totally blind according to the medical field. Yet, as she was told many years ago, she can see very well indeed.
Why it can even be said that the disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative disease she has had over 65 years, actually was and is a blessing in disguise.
That is an example of the beauty of life which we all can often be blind to.
The sunsets are pretty cool too.

Dear friend John, Thank you for another of your good messages. I have a photo of Anne Frank among my other photos pinned to my dining room wall. I have had many Jewish friends and I have been always deeply affected by memories and stories of the holocaust. It ended when I was 10 years old and I learned a lot about it after that. As a pacifist Quaker, I can hardly believe it happened. Perhaps the people of Denmark demonstrate the strongest aversion to it. They ask foreigners not to pronounce their capitol correctly because it reminds them of how the Nazis pronounced it. So it should be Copen-hay-gen rather than Copen-hog-en. Also, in
Copenhagen I saw a Nazi tank on display in a small grassy circle.
Now we focus on having a happy Spring! Love, George

You’re most welcome, George. And thank you for your comments. Like you, I have Jewish friends, and that always made me more aware of the holocaust horrors than I would have been otherwise.

Happy spring, dear brother! Love, Joohn

I believe that beauty is in the heart of the beholder. If we love, are compassionate, feel the love of the angels and company of heaven that comes to us every minute, how can you miss the beauty of everything or everyone.

I make it a point to tell people that I have never met (grocery store, on the street, etc.) how beautiful they are – be it their hair, their faces, or the way they move, whatever. It is amazing how surprised they are, and how a smile comes to them. To me, I am just saying the truth of what I see. I also tell people, who are obviously very joyful, how they made me feel happy.

This is just my way of sharing the joy of life.

All animals big or small are beautiful to me, and I spend as much time as I can outdoors in nature. It’s all beautiful.

Here are the lyrics from a song about the dessert.

“Sage and sand is a no mans land, and it covers a vast estate. There are things beyond our dreams that lay in natures hands. Sage and sand is a beautiful land.”

It is the heart filled with love that sees the beauty.

      Thanks very much, Mikala.

What a beautiful way to greet people you’ve never met! Imagine if all of us did that all the time. We could literally transform this world overnight. As A Course in Miracles says, “God is in everything I see.” In people certainly, in animals, in plants, even in so-called “inanimate” objects.

I love those lyrics you shared. As you say, when our hearts are filled with love, we see the beauty in all that is. May we all have hearts brimming over with love always.
