It is a dangerous business going out your front door. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien, British author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
Do you know anyone who’s what I call “a doom and gloom specialist?” You know—someone who sees danger lurking all over the place?
I think most of us do. It might even be that person you see in the mirror every day.
Spirit
The “trick” to life, the way to remember the joy you felt before you incarnated, is to look for the good, for the God, in all that is. Many years ago, we defined God (or Goddess) as all that is. Divinity exists in, and is the essence of, all that is. It’s that simple.
If you choose to accept that, then you will find joy everywhere. You will not see danger lurking all over the place. Why? Because it’s not there. It’s an illusion. An illusion you invented. The world you see “out there” is not real.
Your perception of the world out there is but a mirror. You project what you carry within onto the world you think you see. The world you call “objective.” There’s nothing objective about it. It’s all in you.
When you realize that, when you’re aware of it in every waking and dreaming moment, you will find the joy that is your birthright. The joy you have forgotten when you took on human form.
You’ve probably heard of Debbie Downer. (Spirit is referring to a fictional character from the television show, Saturday Night Live.) Debbie sees her entire world as filled with many terrible dangers lurking everywhere, ready to pounce on her.
That world feels quite real to Debbie. But it’s a choice she’s made. She can change her mind at any moment. Then she will experience the joy she has forgotten.
It’s all your choice, whether you are experiencing pain and struggle, or joy and peace, danger or safety. It’s that simple.

I really enjoyed reading this post just now, John. I was thinking something along those same lines today, while working in my new remote, collaborative environment.
I remember looking around at my co-workers on the Zoom video call, listening to everyone report in on their end of things, and thinking, “We are all the same. Different personalities, different tasks, different motivations, different experiences, but all the same nonetheless!”
They are a part of my mirror projection as I am a part of theirs. Ultimately, we are One. And the thought brought great joy to my entire being.
Thank you, Karen.
I appreciate your thoughts and comments. They make perfect sense, and in a way I’d never really thought about. We are all projections of one another because we are One. Thank you very much for that powerful insight!
THank you for another beautiful post John. This is one that I could/should read daily, especially on Mondays:) Have a warm weekend!!
Thanks very much, Chris, for your kind words. You have a warm weekend too! I know how cold it is there your part of the country.
Thank you for the uplifting post today. It’s easy to fall into negative thinking especially if you listen to any news broadcast. I laughed so hard at the SNL clip. Thank you for sharing that. A little laughter is a great way to start the day!
You’re most welcome, Ilona! I’m glad you liked it.
I agree with you — in today’s world it’s easy to fall into negativity. I limit my exposure to the news. I look at just enough to know what’s going on in the world. But that’s it.
Laughter, as you say, is a great way to start the day. And a great way to heal whatever ails us.
Have a great weekend!
Hi John,
This post came at the right time for me. I am having some health problems at the moment and this has led my thinking to be very pessimistic when usually I am an optimist. I am seeing a therapist and he is very respectful of my spiritual beliefs. I have fallen into the trap of being afraid if I think of bad things n case I make them manifest. It’s really tough. I think everyone a negative thought enters my head I will replace it with a positive one!
Hi Sarah,
I’m delighted the post came at a good time for you. It sounds like you’re facing some pretty hefty challenges.
I think there’s a big difference between noticing “bad” thoughts and dwelling on them. When I face undesirable challenges or negative thoughts, I simply remind myself we are all loved and cared for by the universe — whether we call it God, Goddess, etc. The name doesn’t matter. All that does matter is to know we are loved, and everything always happens for our highest and best good.
I’ll hold you in my thoughts and prayers.
