Diversity Revisited

we are one in diversity

We are united in diversity

A while ago, we published a post about diversity. With the state of our world today, it’s worth revisiting the subject.

We don’t have to look far to see how much controversy exists today because of diversity.

As Spirit said in that last post, “… the issue most of you face in this lifetime … is diversity, specifically, accepting diversity..”

We could all look back into our pasts and probably find countless times where we framed our challenges with an “us versus them” perspective. Usually, “them” were different from “us” in some way. Diversity rears its ugly head again!

There are many things I admire about Dutch culture. Among them is their acceptance and embrace of diversity.

I’ve always loved learning new languages. So now I’m learning Dutch. Berna Copray, a dear friend in The Netherlands, is helping me with this.

This short video is about diversity in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. (Although Amsterdam is the capital, the Dutch government operates in The Hague.)

Volumes could be given re. this topic. Was it not for diversity we would not exist.
Diversity is a necessary part of evolution. Free will was ruled in to provide it.
Without change time would also not exist.
On a psychological level studies have shown that IQ levels are higher when the person speaks more than one language, for example.
Expansion is the reason why we exist as humans (animals and vegetation as well).
As can be seen in any body of water, if change is not present, the result is stagnancy. The same applies to us. If we do not use our muscles they deteriorate and disappear. Nuff, lol.

Here in Toronto you can walk down the street and meet so many different people, see the different cultures at work. And on the most part we all get along. I believe there are some that are so afraid of change that somehow they think their life will change also. But change is essential in growing spiritually, physically and mentally. Immigrants are no different than what we are, refugee’s are no different.
In the long one, working together, we build a better world, a better country. In a way my many great’s grandparents came to Canada during your war of independence. They were wealthy and left everything behind because of their belief in England and the crown, they were Royalists :). So they too were refugee’s People need to grow, need to step away from what has always been and take that giant step into the unknown. Don’t fear them for they are aiding us to be tolerant, understanding and loving.

How synchronous! I was thinking of diversity in the same context as you did. As you said, it is challenging for many of us to experience this level of diversity and a difference between acceptance and tolerance… without being judgemental. Paradoxically, unity in a society does not come from conformity, doesn’t it ?

The gentleman in the video comes from Congo and I assume he speaks French as well as his mother tongue, Dutch (it’s mandatory to learn Dutch once you settle there) and English. I guess he did an interview in English for non-Dutch viewers? In a sense, he is a fine example of diversity 🙂 I miss Holland. Enjoy learning Dutch!

    Hi John,

So I’ll be able to write to you in Dutch from nonw on? It is not only in Amsterdam where you will find people from all over the worls It is the same in all major cities and even over here, in the rural areas of the eastern part of the country. Our own half-Vietnamese grandson plays mostly with his Turkish girlfriend and his Nigerian neighbour. Or with the little daughter of our Moldavian neighbour who also is a classmate of his. All of them being in the ages of 4-6. Religious differences (Christian, Moslim and Buddhist (our grandson)) are also not important.

I noticed though that the man in the video conducted the interview in English although he has been living here since 2008. Our daughter in law, who arrived here in 2010, has been speaking Dutch for many years already.

      Hi Anny,

Well, you better wait a while before you write me in Dutch! 🙂

I wish every country in the world had the beautiful, tolerant attitudes you describe. But we’re getting closer and closer to that, even though it doesn’t always seem that way.

Thanks very much, Anny! I hope all is well with you and your loved ones.
