Getting Away from It All by John Cali

On October 29 The Washington Post ran an article demonstrating how pervasive technology has become in our lives.

The first sentence of the article read “You can’t get away from a cell phone call, even at the top of the world.”

It seems TeliaSonera, a Swedish telecom company, has installed new high-speed internet service near, of all places, Mount Everest’s base camp at 17,000 feet above sea level. Now folks climbing the world’s tallest mountain can use cell phones, Facebook, and Twitter on their way to the summit.

As you might expect, there are people for and against the idea. Of course, it’s a done deal now.

The article quoted Gordon Janow, who sets up base camps on the mountain, as saying “I don’t know if it’s good or bad. It was one of the few places you could go and lose yourself from the world.”

Makes you think, doesn’t it? You cannot get away from the distractions of the modern world even up on Mount Everest now.

Here’s Spirit.

Your modern world certainly does have many distractions, prominently including all the technology you have literally at your fingertips.

This is not necessarily a “bad” thing. After all, technology — cell phones, email, the internet, etc. — has helped to create a global consciousness. You are all becoming more keenly aware of something you’ve been saying for years, long before technology became such a prominent part of your lives — you are all one.

Today, partly because of technology, you are not only saying those words, you are living them.

So, from our perspective, that’s one of technology’s greatest gifts to you. You are now truly all connected. You have instant, 24-hour access to all parts of the planet and to everyone on it.

The “other side of the coin” is many of you are so consumed with technology, your lives are becoming unbalanced. You know that saying you have — “Too much of a good thing….”

It’s important — for the sake of your balance, your sanity, and your spiritual growth — for you to keep your priorities in order.

Your first priority, above all else, is taking care of yourself. Giving yourself time to nourish and love you, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

You cannot take proper care of yourself if you are immersed in technology 24 hours a day. Or if you are continually immersed in anything else.

Balance is the key here. Your modern world often challenges you and it’s easy to become unbalanced.

Our advice is to take time regularly, ideally every day, to just be by yourself. Take time to meditate, to focus on your breathing, to get back in touch with yourself, to get back in touch with your soul.

There is nothing more powerful or effective in maintaining inner peace and balance than mindful meditation and simply breathing consciously.

That will restore your balance — simply getting away from it all, and immersing yourself in the love and peace that can come only from your soul.
