Thoughts on Life after Death

I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that there is no death the way we understood it. The body dies, but not the soul. ~ Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

We received some deeply moving comments on last week’s post, Life and Death. It’s obviously a subject of universal interest , as sooner or later, it touches us all.

Teresa, one of our readers, sent us her thoughts on the passing of her grandfather. With her permission, we’re publishing her touching story this week. We thought it might help those of you who’ve told me of your struggles with death.

I remember clearly when my grandfather was close to passing on. I was sitting at the side of his bed. My parents and aunt and uncle had gone to get some coffee.

He was weak and was just taken off life support. He started to raise up a little in bed, and he was reaching up his body and his hand was reaching out.

He startled me and I don’t think he was aware I was sitting next to him. He turned to me and said, “I can see them, but I can’t reach….”

He was talking about all his family who had passed on. He stayed with us for another month before he passed.

I was with him on the day he went home. I had gotten up early that day to see him, earlier than I planned. Just had a “feeling” to go early.

I was sitting with him and saw a beautiful spark flow up and out of his body. At that moment I knew he passed. Not sure how long I was there until a nurse came into the room. He was in hospice.

That was February 2000. And while he’s still with me, I miss him so much. He was an angel on Earth.

Thank you, Teresa, for sharing your story!

This musical video doesn’t deal directly with life and death. But the words could mean many things. See what they mean to you. Titled The Wandering Soul, this is the last song John Denver wrote, though he never recorded it. James Twyman performs this beautiful version.

My Mom didn’t want us to watch her pass; we knew that, but just couldn’t, and wouldn’t, leave her. When she was very close to passing, the strangest thing happened. Our whole group LEFT, for various reasons. My daughter stayed, holding her hand.
I’d been home for 10 minutes, when I felt this very strong rush of energy pass right through me. It felt like a warm gust of wind. I knew it was my Mom, telling me goodbye. I told her I loved her very much, and then just sat there, embracing her spirit energy that was still around me. It was 6:38pm. Then my daughter called with the news.
My daughter later told me something really strange happened to her, too. While holding my Mom’s hand, watching her breath become slower, she just couldn’t take her eyes off of her. Her phone rang and it was a telemarketer. She let go of my Mom’s hand, turning away to answer her phone. She quickly hung up, turning back to my mom. She had already passed. It was 6:38pm.
My mom didn’t want us to be left with memories of staring at her as she left her body. We all KNOW she orchestrated everything. All of us leaving. My daughter turning away. It was the most unselfish, caring and loving act she could have ever done for all of us.
Returning home yet again, I found my makeup drawer open. I closed it, left the room. 10 minutes later, that drawer was open again. That was my Mom, saying “I’m okay and I’m still here!”

Thank you, Tracy, for sharing this beautiful story of your mom’s passing.

We’ve said many times on this forum that we never lose those we love — they are always with us. But our world still struggles with the illusion of death. And it is just an illusion, albeit often a painful one.

Thank you again for your mom’s story. I know it will uplift and inspire those who read it.

      God bless you, Tracy!

      John

I wholeheartedly believe our loved ones will be there to greet us! In the hours before my mom passed, we all felt unseen presences, helping and guiding her. Even in a semi-coma state, she kept saying “okay… Okay” as if she were replying to someone. I felt her guide there, reassuring her, telling her it was okay. I talk with her all the time still and she visits, and guides, me often!

Thank you, Tracy, for sharing your story. No matter how spiritually advanced we may be, it’s always comforting to know we never lose those we love.

I’m with you, John, in holding a vision for that. How wonderful that would be and how much we could learn from each other if we could come from a place of listening and be open. Experienced some of it while facilitating my talking-stick circles and when hubby’s parents came to visit. Mom and I couldn’t wait until everyone went to bed at night and we’d settle in for long talks through the night ’til daybreak sometimes. Love it. It’s possible.

I love that experience you shared of your 2-yr old dog, John, and think it is especially revealing to us when our animals pass because of the true unconditional love they give. That type of love is what, I believe, we truly long for but have a hard time giving and receiving. And, when our animals pass they bring us so close to that veil that separates us and helps us experience and remember it again.

When Sabor left and I felt the whoosh of her leaving her body, I wanted to follow. Her spirit, along with the many others we’ve lost over the years remain and I feel especially close to them when I quiet my mind and become still.

There’s another story I’m reminded of several years ago of a doe who lost her twin fawns in our corral. I still don’t know what that was all about and that is okay. The experience alone was powerful enough. I think I talked about in a post I wrote awhile back. Like you said, those feelings still remain with me today and of all our animals when they passed including our horses. Now, that was a different experience too.

Thank you for creating this dialogue. So wish sometimes we could all sit around a circle (maybe over a campfire or kitchen table) and talk with everyone and hear their stories way into the night. Hmmm – can you just picture that? May happen some day. Love and hugs, my friend.

      Thanks very much, Pat.

I agree our animals are such powerful, loving teachers and role models for us. They have no fear of life, nor of death.

What a beautiful vision that is — all of us sitting around in a circle, a campfire, or at a kitchen table! You know, when we were young we used to do that with the older members of our family, usually every week. And it would be wonderful to do it with this spiritual family who occasionally gather here. Let’s hold a vision of that!

Love and hugs to you, Pat,

    Hi John,

My husband left his body in March last year. I was with him and celebrated his passing from life into new life. It was time for him to leave.
Some months later I experienced during my sleep a dream that was not a dream. I was sitting in a lecture theatre, the lecture being on ‘A Course of Miracles.’ There was only one vacant seat – next to me. Suddenly but gently, My darling Tom was in that seat. He looked so radiant and joyful. Our arms touched. The energy was electrifyingly beautiful. I knew that all was well with him and rejoiced.

We had put several darlings to sleep and grieved deeply each time. When it was time for our special golden retriever, Tessa, to leave us, I suggested to my husband that we focus on love, joy and gratitude for all she had given us. This we did. It was a very special experience. In the small hours after, I woke and went to the sitting room to meditate on her passing. After a short time there was a whoosh of energy and Tess appeared on my knee looking so happy and youthful. She stayed for a minute or so while I stroked her and rejoiced in having her with me again. And then she disappeared. What a wonderful gift it was.

What a wonderful gift, indeed! Our loved ones are with us always. Thank you, Elizabeth.

Thank you, John. Does seem like there’s a lot of interest on this these days. I think we’re reaching for (and awakening) to something more in life. I think the curiosity has always been there but what we’re embarking on now is so needed and refreshing.

Not only with experiences with my grandmother, I remember when one of our dogs passed away. She had been in lots of pain and I had tried to help her with some Reiki energy that helped. But, ultimately, we had to put her to sleep.

I remember loving her at the time when they were giving her the shot and looking into her eyes. It was like she was so ready and grateful. At the time she died and left her body, I felt of whoosh of air blow past my face and immediately sensed she left. I cried and wondered where she went and what it was like. It was so real and evident she was gone from her body. She left me with the feeling she was free of pain now and happy we set her free.

    • John Cali

      You’re most welcome, Pat.

What a beautiful story you shared of your dog’s passing!

I’ve had several dogs over the years we’ve had to “put to sleep,” as we say. One was particularly painful, as he was only 2 years old. He had a brain tumor. He was a true soulmate, and “rescued” me at a difficult time in my life.

A few days after his passing, I felt his old familiar energy around the house. I don’t know how he did this, but I even heard the familiar tinkling of the tag on his collar.

That was long ago. But he’s still with me, and comes to visit often.

As Spirit says so often, we never lose those we love.
