Beyond the River by Hans Brockhuis

You are walking through a forest. Sometimes it is hot; sometimes it’s cold. Your feet are bare and the ground is occasionally uneven. Stones lie on your path and now and again the trail seems to vanish. Yet there are also moments along the path that everything seems fine and well; then the trail is mossy with flowers here and there, and you can hear the birds singing their wonderful songs.

You carry a backpack.Read more

Golden Gate in the Heavens by Hans Brockhuis

Just moments ago it was raining heavily. The heavens still looked a bit grey, were full of ozone though, and smelled fresh, elated and loaded with expectation.

Askew above me an oval shining golden spot in the veil of clouds attracted my eye. To my surprise and with an elegant swing I unexpectedly rose up from the earth and seemed to travel in the direction of the golden gate in the heavens.

An unseen force took me and I wondered what to expect.Read more

Do You Struggle With the Holidays? by John Cali

George_c_scott_as_scroogeGeorge C. Scott as Scrooge by Bob Doucette

David O. Selznick, the legendary Hollywood filmmaker, once said “I’m so depressed. Christmas is the worst of all. Holidays are terrible, worse than Sundays. I get melancholia.”

Some of my family and friends struggle with the holidays, particularly the winter holidays. (Or summer, if you’re in the southern hemisphere.) Like Scrooge and Selznick, they dread to see them coming each year—whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, etc. etc.

Aren’t we missing the whole point of the holiday season?Read more

The Certainty of Uncertainty by John Cali and Spirit

Did you ever wish you could know what the future holds? I sure did—I spent most of my younger years planning every detail of my life, present and future. How deeply I yearned for certainty, for that sure knowing everything would turn out exactly as I wanted.

Talk about an exercise in futility! I finally learned to embrace not knowing what the future held—to embrace the certainty of uncertainty.

All we have is the present moment. That much we can know with certainty.Read more

The Qualities of a Saint by Jane Ritson

Seattle_-_Blessed_Sacrament_-_St._Jude_Thadeus_01Saint Jude Copyright © 2013 Joe Mabel

After the devastation of the hurricane named after St Jude I decided to do a little research on what qualities make a saint.

Initially it was a term of greeting for those in Jesus’ inner circle, otherwise known as his disciples.  After this it was used for people who suffered through following their faith.  Saint-hood is associated with those who devote their life to their beliefs, often entering a monastery or religious order.  Some lived alone, away from the pressures of society. Read more

11 Reasons You May Not Be As Happy As You Want To Be by John Cali and Spirit

Happy Smiling Cat by Yumi Kimura

One of the most common complaints Spirit and I hear from folks is they don’t know how to be happy unless certain conditions are met. Conditions that often have nothing to do with them, and which are beyond their control.

Sound familiar? That was the way I lived my life for many years—till I finally woke up.

Here are some of Spirit’s thoughts.

Spirit

As John said, we hear lots of excuses why people think they cannot be happy.Read more

Are We Getting Closer To Global Oneness? by John Cali

The Dalai Lama said “Whether one is rich or poor, educated or illiterate, religious or non-believing, man or woman, black, white, or brown, we are all the same. Physically, emotionally, and mentally, we are all equal. We all share basic needs for food, shelter, safety, and love. We all aspire to happiness and we all shun suffering. Each of us has hopes, worries, fears, and dreams. Each of us wants the best for our family and loved ones.Read more

What Is Forgiveness and Why Do You Need It? by John Cali

Auschwitz, Nazi Prison Camp

I have a childhood friend, Sue (not her real name) who hates her mother. And her mother’s been dead for years! But Sue has not let go of her hatred. It’s killing her—literally. Her health is a shambles.

I knew Sue’s mother very well. We were close friends, despite the difference in our ages. She was not the monster Sue remembers her as. But even if she had been, is it worth it to Sue to keep killing herself bit by bit?Read more

Do You Want To Be Healthy, Happy and Slim? by Barbara Clark

Where is your focus? Are your negative beliefs being activated?  What is your vibration around being healthy, happy and slim?

Try this simple exercise, say aloud “I am healthy, happy and slim”.  Pay close attention to how you feel when you say the words. How true do they feel?  Do you feel a “stuckness”, resistance, tightness?

Now try, “Why am I so healthy, happy and slim?”. How does that feel? Is there a difference?

This exercise will help you feel  where your vibration is in relation to health, happiness and having a slender body.… Read more

Where Is Your Home? by John Cali

Image © Barbara Clark, 2012

When I was much younger the only place I considered home was the little farm town on the shores of Lake Erie where I grew up. When I was away from there I was always homesick.

Way back when I started this work with my spirit guides I began to get a different sense of what home really is—not just for myself, but for all of us.

Here’s Spirit.

Spirit

You miss so much joy and peace by always looking for your happiness, your “home” in every place except where you are right now.Read more

You Can Grow Older Gracefully and Still Have Fun Along the Way by John Cali

We live in a society today obsessed with youth and physical beauty. And, in my opinion, a society with too little regard for the wisdom and experience of older folks.

Society considers growing older a curse none of us can escape—unless we die young. We’re driven desperately to find something—anything—that will keep us young. The list is virtually endless—plastic surgery, injections, drugs, etc.

It never occurs to most of us that growing older can actually be fun. It doesn’t have to be a drag.Read more

How Can Anyone Be Happy In This Confusing, Chaotic World? by John Cali

Many of us measure happiness by external criteria—how much money we have, what kind of house we live in, how many friends we have, etc. But those things can, and will, change. Then we’re unhappy.

The money, the house, the friends—those are the “reasons” we use to be happy. But they are never the cause of our happiness. So what is the real cause of happiness?

US President Abraham Lincoln said “A man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be.”Read more

The Power of Compassion by John Cali

Be Compassionate

Many folks my spirit guides and I talk with want desperately to help their loved ones in pain, whether its physical, mental, or spiritual pain. And they often feel helpless, not knowing the right thing to do.

Here are some thoughts from Spirit:

You can choose to live from the outside in, allowing the whims of the world to beat and buffet you about. Or you can choose to live from the inside out, allowing your natural state of love and joy to create the world you experience.Read more

The Power of Animals, Part 2 by John Cali

In our last blog post, The Power of Animals, Spirit talked about animals as our teachers. Here is another touching animal story, this one about a delightful little dog who loves everyone.

I was shopping recently in a local store. Just after I arrived, one of the young ladies who works there came in with her dog. Life is pretty informal here in this little Wyoming town. As in Europe, people don’t mind if you bring your dog into a store.Read more

Why Not Be Happy For No Reason? By John Cali

Whenever my spirit guides or I tell folks our natural state is to be happy, we usually get some strange responses—and even some angry arguments.

Some of the usual arguments go like this:

How can I be happy in a world that’s falling apart?

How can I be happy when my loved ones are not happy?

How can I be happy when I have no money?

How can happiness be our natural state? That doesn’t make sense.

And so on and on.Read more

Do You Have a Hard Time Loving Yourself? John Cali

As we move deeper into the holiday season, I see more and more folks getting stressed and overwhelmed. That’s not what Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, etc. are all about. They’re about celebrating the season, one another, and ourselves.

Yet many folks put themselves at the end of their long holiday lists. They don’t take time to slow down and enjoy the season. In short, they have a hard time loving themselves in their frantic rush to get everything done.

Does that sound like you?Read more

Why Do Disasters Like Hurricane Sandy Happen? by John Cali

As you all know, Hurricane Sandy devastated many areas along the United States east coast last week. Among the hardest-hit were the metropolitan New York and New Jersey areas.

Many folks are still reeling from the shock and the aftermath of that storm. Damage has been estimated at $50 billion. Nearly a million New York and New Jersey homes and businesses had no electricity, and vehicle fuel is in short supply.

According to weather forecasters, tonight another storm, a so-called “nor’easter,” will descend on the United States’ mid-Atlantic and northeastern coastal areas, including New York and New Jersey.Read more

Is the World Driving You Crazy? Part 2 by John Cali

A few days ago we published a blog post called Is the World Driving You Crazy? We got quite a few comments on that post.

One comment in particular caught my attention. I always read them all—and I appreciate the time and energy all of you put into your comments. So thank you for that.

This comment was from our dear friend, Ian Barnfield. I realize not all of you may have seen Ian’s comment. So I wanted to share it with you today.Read more

Are You Trying To Save the World? by John Cali

Lately, for whatever reason, I’ve been hearing a lot from folks having a tough time with what’s happening on our planet today—the wars, corruption, financial collapses, crime, etc. etc. They feel lost and lonely, despairing of ever being able to change things for the better.

Is our world going to hell in a handbasket? Is there any hope, any light at the end of the tunnel?

Here’s Spirit.

What’s the Difference Between Self-Image and Self-Esteem? by John Cali

There was a Gallup poll a while back about the self-esteem of Americans. It concluded 2 out of 3 (almost 70 percent) suffered from low or no self-esteem. That’s a pretty sobering statistic.

What’s the difference between self-esteem and self-image?

Most of us at one time or another in our lives build up elaborate self-images. They’re usually based on externals—how physically attractive we are, how much money we have, how many friends we have, how much worldly power we command, how big our houses are, etc.Read more

Are You Happy? Part 2 by John Cali

We had some interesting and insightful responses to our article, Are You Happy?, earlier this week. So today we’re going to talk again about happiness.

Here are a few more of my favorite happiness quotations:

  • Through practices of self-awareness, you will establish an unshakable baseline of happiness through all of life’s ups and downs. ~ Deepak Chopra
  • Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.

Are You Happy? by John Cali

Spirit and I have talked about happiness many times over the years. Although they and I firmly believe we were meant to be happy in this lifetime, no matter what our circumstances, I know so few truly happy people. Often that’s because they look for happiness where they will never find it.

Today I want to share with you some of my favorite happiness quotations:

  • Remember happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely on what you think.

How To Be Happy by John Cali

The Best Thing To Wear Is a Smile

The past few weeks we’ve been updating our computer systems and website (again!). Since I’m basically a one-person operation, it’s taking much of my time and energy.

So this week we’re revisiting a newsletter article we published a while back, on the subject of happiness. That topic generates seemingly endless conversation.

My spirit guides have always said happiness is a choice we can freely make. Not everyone agrees with that, as you’ll see in this newsletter article.… Read more

The Far Side of The Rainbow Bridge by John Cali & Barbara Clark

We recently wrote an article, Farewell to Rosie, about the death of Barbara Clark’s dog, Rosie on May 2. After she died Barbara and I were talking on the phone that same day. Rosie suddenly appeared to me.

She gave me a short, clear message she wanted me to convey to Barbara. She said “I love you, Mom. Thank you for everything.”

For about a week after she died Rosie continued giving me short messages for Barbara, usually when Barbara and I were talking on the phone.… Read more

Are You Stressed Out? by John Cali

One of the most common complaints I hear in my work is how stressful the world and our lives are. There’s too much to do, and too little time to do it in. There are so many distractions demanding our attention and energy. The world seems filled with bad news.

How can we avoid stress and find peace of mind? It seems an impossible task in an impossible world. But it’s far from impossible. Here’s Spirit.

Your world certainly seems filled with stress almost everywhere you look.… Read more
