What Is Perception or Can You Trust What You See?

It is impossible not to believe what you see. But it is equally impossible to see what you do NOT believe. ~ A Course in Miracles

                Which is right?

A few days ago, I got an interesting lesson is how deceiving our perception can be. I was at my desk getting ready to open some mail. Looking around for my letter opener, I could not find it.

After searching my entire desk unsuccessfully, I was about to give up. At that moment, I looked down and there was my letter opener — right there in plain sight, directly in front of me. But a couple minutes earlier, it was invisible to me.

What do you think happened? Was the letter opener there a few minutes earlier—or not? Was the letter opener there now—or not? Was my perception wrong? If so, which time? I could not be wrong both times—or could I? Or, was I right both times?

Here is a fascinating TED talk by Daniel Simons, a professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois. It may get you to questioning your perceptions of the world around us, and perhaps the world beyond us.

We are creatures of habit and we love short-cuts. That was a gift from evolution.
At the same time we also create. What we create may pop up right away or it might not pop up for years depending on its attracting power, kind of like bank interest which might not happen for quite a while.
Usually the manifestation is unexpected and that is as it should be or we might get a little too cocky too often. It is a game and games have rules. The important thing is that we are here to do a job whether we right now like it or not.

Maybe it’s time I stopped believing that socks disappear in the washing machine! Certainly worth a try… Thanks, John

Our eyes don’t lie to us but our brains, now that’s a different storey!
We generate optical illusions for our own amusement. Sometimes that part of our brain that is more spiritual than physical desides to amuse itself.
