Time and Forgetfulness by John Cali

Often, when I’m channeling my spirit guides, I lose all sense of time.

One of the people we gave a reading to recently said something similar. She asked one of my spirit guides why she forgets their conversations when she and he talk.

Here’s their conversation (with her permission):

Questioner:

Why do I forget when we talk? I don’t forget when I talk to physical human beings. Why do I almost instantly forget what you’ve told me?

Spirit guide:

It’s very common and the reason is that we are speaking to you from a place where linear time does not exist. So right now, you are in no time, as you are speaking to us. We’re in no time, time doesn’t exist here and so it doesn’t exist for you either.

And so, if time doesn’t exist, it’s pretty hard to remember something when you are back in your usual state of consciousness, when your human mind has taken over again. It’s pretty hard to remember a time when that time never existed, because it’s “eternal time.”

And so, what’s happening here, let us explain that a little bit. It’s not that you forget, because forgetting is a function of linear time. And so, when you forget something, it’s because you don’t remember what happened in the past, whether it’s the past 5 minutes ago or 5 years ago or 500 years ago.

But once you move out of linear time then your human mind sort of goes to sleep, which is exactly what is going on right now. And so, when you don’t have that reference of linear time, what happens very often—and we think this is what is happening with you in the context of your question—is that you don’t have any reference point.

And so, you are out of time. Right now, you’re out of time. We don’t live in time, but when you are speaking to us and our energies merge and connect, then you are literally out of time, out of linear time.

And so, when you come back out of these question-and-answer sessions with us it’s hard (for you) to put our conversation into the context of (linear) time. You think you’ve forgotten it but you haven’t forgotten it.

Your spirit self, your higher self remembers because it also does not live in linear time. But you, the human part of this being that you are—this grander being that you are—doesn’t remember it. Sometimes you will, you might get glimpses of it. It’s sort of like a dream.

Questioner:

Yes, and when you talk to me directly, the same thing happens. Even though I tell myself I am going to remember this and it’s really clear at the time when we are having a conversation.

Spirit guide:

Well, since you won’t remember this, you might want to listen to the recording.

I wasn’t planning on commenting even though I have lots of experience with time – one of my favorite subjects actually. I grasp that it is a construct for human reality but I think it is also a magnificent one.

I honestly do not know how music could exist without time – since it requires space and rhythm to exist – it just wouldn’t work without the beat. But time in regards to music is also quite paradoxical – the music moves and flows and for the active listener and certainly for the players it is quite timeless within the space of the music. It seems that it comes from the eternal side because it is every bit as hard to remember as perhaps a conversation with Chief Joseph . I am more particularly talking about musical improvisation – because it is never done the same way and all that is left is the experience.

The irony for me is I have countless lyrics about time – “never enough time for no time” or
“if we take our time we will find – there’s more time to take” or “if we want time to go slowly it goes quickly, if we want it to go fast it stays and stays” – 3 different songs that just popped in my head.

So with that – if you have the time – one of my favorite time songs –

When I’m focused on something I love to do, time flies by. I don’t pay attention to it. If I’m waiting for someone to show up, time slows down because my mind is watching the clock.

Meditation and altered states of consciousness (day dreaming, night dreaming, conscious altering your focus away from time ) , I believe, can add years to your life and an understanding, a knowledge that goes beyond physical learning. The moment we step away from time the moment we grasp the reality that is our true home we are more alive. There is so much energy available to us with just a quieting of our conscious mind.

I lose track of time when I’m doing art or surfing the web – I guess I’m in the flow.

Thank you for sharing that question. I have often wondered the same thing. I especially enjoyed Chief Joseph’s last comment. His humor is delightful and easy to remember.

I use to live in a place where my house was surrounded by mountains on three sides. I lived in the valley between them. Out there I could lose myself. There were times that I had no clue what day it was, sometimes even what month, and I didn’t care, except to get ready for the seasons, that was my biggest clue as to what time it was. Now, at work, there are times I have no clue what time it is, and it goes by quickly or slowly. I have always found time to be ‘strange’. The thing I have found to be true is this: When I’m in the zone, so-to-speak, time will slow way down, and everything I do is in perfect timing, all goes as planned. When I am not in the zone, it tends to speed up and I feel left behind and many things seem to not flow as well. Interesting is it not? When I am having ‘fun’, time slows down for that moment, then the rest of the day goes by too quick for my liking, I just want it to not end.
I would love to be in a place where time is does not exist, oh the things I would do!
