Old Muley by John Cali

John Cali

Down the road from me, one of the neighbors has a small horse ranch. I drive by it almost every day, and love watching the horses frolicking and playing. There are probably 15 or 20 of them, and they can be pretty lively.

Also living on the ranch is a cute little grey donkey. I’ve taken to calling him Old Muley.

Old Muley shares the horses’ stables and fields. And he’s often out in the fields when the horses are out.

But even when the horses are out, Old Muley is always off by himself, apparently content and peaceful. When the sun’s hot and blazing, the horses are out in it. But Old Muley seeks shelter in the shade of the trees rimming the fields. When the cold winds of winter are howling, Old Muley is usually inside the warm stables while his equine counterparts are braving the icy blasts of the Wyoming winter.

Old Muley clearly marches to the beat of a different drummer. He’s not swayed by the habits or ways of his companions. He follows his own path.

A great example, I think, for all of us is Old Muley.

Spirit

Most of you do not march to the beat of your own drummer, to use John’s words. After all, you are not encouraged or taught to be independent thinkers and doers. You are talked into, even coerced into, following the dictates of the powers that be.

You know, those powers that can be almost any you can imagine–you fill in the blanks: your parents, church, government, lover, friend, child, sibling–you name it. Someone is always going to be out there telling you they know better than you how to run your life.

And most of you, at least at one time or another in your lives–and some of you most of your lives–succumb to that seductive siren call.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You are free to follow your heart. You have never not been free to follow your heart.

And, in fact, if everyone followed her or his heart, your world could be transformed, literally overnight, into a paradise.

We can already hear the tides of protest. “But, Spirit, if everyone did only what they wanted, the world would be in chaos!”

Well, look around you–where is the world now? In chaos!

And it’s not because humans are following their hearts. It’s because they’re ignoring their hearts, and doing what they’re told to do. Talk about a perfect prescription for chaos!

And so it’s clear, is it not, many of you find it devilishly difficult to break out of the old habits?

But that’s okay because this is merely a step in your ultimate success. None of you will ever fail. You cannot get your lives wrong, no matter how many “mistakes” you think you’ve made.

Life on Mother Earth is only a series of opportunities for you to remember who you really are–divine beings of love and light who will literally save the world from whatever illusory disasters you imagine could befall it.

All is well. All is as it should be.

Old Muley is a perfect role model for all of you. Follow your own path. Follow your own hearts. And all will be well in heaven and on earth.
