Over the years I’ve had several folks among my family and friends who were homosexual. They did not often talk about it with me, even though they knew I accepted them as they were.

But back in those days no one talked about homosexuality. Hell, we didn’t even talk about heterosexuality except in hushed tones, lest we be embarrassed if someone overheard us. The terms “gay,” “lesbian,” “transgender,” and “bisexual” were not even in our vocabulary.

Many years ago a younger cousin I was close with hung himself at the age of 15. He was a kind, wise, and intelligent kid—mature beyond his years. He was a loner, as I also was—so we naturally gravitated to each other, even though I was ten years older. I suspected the reason for his suicide, but I was never sure.

What I am sure of is this: his death had a devastating effect on his immediate family, and also on the rest of our large Italian family. We’d never had a suicide in the family, and this was simply unfathomable.

We’d also never had any gay people in our family who talked about it—or ever “came out.”

So I completely understand, and empathize with, families dealing with these issues today.

Here are some thoughts Spirit gave us a while back.

Spirit

In a real sense, you are all “gay”—because you all possess masculine and feminine aspects.

You get into difficulties when you over-identify with one aspect and exclude the other.

You are free to express any and all aspects of who you are.

All expressions are good.

There is nothing wrong with any relationship—heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.

All sexual orientations are good and valid.

Love is the primary purpose of all relationships.

Love will heal all your wounds.

Love will restore you to that place where you remember who you are and why you are here.

Love is who you are and why you are here.

Love is all there is. Nothing matters more than love. Nothing.
