Why Do You Compare?

‘Why do you compare?’ is a chapter in Krishnamurti’s book The Beginnings of Learning.

In the 1990s, I read many of Krishnamurti’s books. For some reason, his writings on comparison have stayed with me ever since. We thought this would be a fitting topic for this week.

Spirit

As you know, comparing yourself to others does you no good. I’m talking specifically about comparing people.

Comparing objects can be useful—even necessary. You might compare things like price, quality, size, appearance, or other practical aspects to make a well-informed decision.

But when you compare yourself to someone else, or compare one person to another, you immediately place yourself in the energy of separation. And separation is not where love leads.

We are all One, and our True Self is nothing but love and light. At our essence, there is no difference between you, me, or any other spirit, whether that spirit appears in physical form or not.

Our false self—the ego—cannot perceive this Oneness. Instead, it sees differences, and from those differences arise comparison, fear, and ultimately, suffering.

When you live from the Heart, from Love, there is nothing to compare. There is no need. You simply recognize and honor the unique expression of the same divine essence in everyone.

Here’s a short video from Lewis Howes about comparison:
