Botox and Beauty by John Cali

I’m sure many of you have seen the news reports about Kerry Campbell, the mother who’s been regularly giving her 8-year-old daughter, Britney, Botox injections. The mother-daughter duo even appeared on Good Morning America to talk about it.

Is our society so obsessed with physical beauty that many women will do anything to be Hollywood-thin and sexy? Even an 8-year-old girl, for God’s sake!

We’ve forgotten all these outside “things” — physical beauty, sex appeal, wealth, power, influence, etc. — are not who we are. Nor do they define our worth.

While there’s nothing wrong with any of those, they are fleeting. To anchor our sense of self-worth and self-esteem in them is insane.

A Gallup poll I read a while back said 2 out of 3 Americans suffer from low self-esteem. That’s almost a whopping 70 percent of the population!

It seems to me, because it’s become challenging to maintain a healthy self-esteem in our modern world, we’re looking outside ourselves for validation, for a strong sense of self-worth. We’ve forgotten how to love ourselves just as we are.
