Helping Others vs. Self-Care

Berna

This year I started practicing yoga because I noticed my body had become stiff. That was my signal: it was time to do something about it.

The body is the vehicle with which you, as spirit, travel through life. Just as you maintain a car to keep it running smoothly, the body deserves the same attention. Without regular care and maintenance, you risk breaking down, both physically and mentally.

Just as you have your car inspected annually, you should also periodically check in with your body. How are you really doing? Where do you feel tension or pain? What does your body need to function well? These questions are just as important as the warning lights on your dashboard.

How about you? Are you taking care of your physical and mental well-being?

Spirit

In our work with people over the years, we have often stressed how critical it is to love yourself as you love others.

In this modern world you all live in, self-care, self-love are abandoned and forgotten. You’re urged to look after others—other people, other causes, other issues—-except for the most critical one—yourself.

It’s really very simple—if you do not attend to your own well-being, you cannot help others.

There’s nothing wrong with focusing on helping others. But before you can do that well, you need to take care of yourself first. Many people are neglecting themselves, their well-being, while focusing on helping others.

Again, there’s nothing wrong with that. BUT first you must love and care for yourself. Only then will you be empowered to care for others.
