Those are noble-sounding sentiments. But they will guarantee you a life of misery and joylessness.

As Dr. Menninger says above, when you give to yourself, you automatically give to others. That means when you show self-love, you are automatically loving others. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Yet it continually amazes me how few of us really believe and accept we should love ourselves.

According to a survey by the Australian company, finder.com, the most common reason people fail to keep new year’s resolutions is setting unrealistic goals. And about 10% of the survey participants said they made too many resolutions.

Sound familiar? I did all that for many years. But no more.

Most new year’s resolutions are focused on changing things about ourselves we don’t like. How about if we turn that around and start appreciating all the things we love about ourselves?

My spirit guides often talk about love, including self-love. They say animals are among our best teachers in learning to love, especially to love ourselves. All love starts with ourselves. In today’s world we seeing an epidemic of self-hatred—the source of virtually all this planet’s woes.

As Louise Hay says, “Self-approval and self-acceptance in the now are the keys to positive changes….When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works.”
