Roman Catholic Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Kazakhstan recently said “…there is only one true religion, which is the Catholic Church founded by God himself.”

Berna and I grew up in Roman Catholic families, although we are no longer Catholic. So we’re keenly aware of the Roman church’s sometimes–controversial opinions.

Did God really start Catholicism, as Bishop Schneider says? Did God prohibit folks going to heaven if they were not Catholic? Would you go to hell if you even walked into a Protestant church?Read more

We realize that might be a crazy-sounding title. Churches don’t go to war. Or do they?

When Berna and Johnny were growing up in the Roman Catholic Church, the church defined what it called a “just war.” In other words, war (and all its brutality) was justified under conditions the Church defined.

Many years ago, our friend Seth said “There is never any justification for violence, for hatred, for murder.”

What’s the answer? Is there any single answer?

The past few weeks, people have been experiencing much difficulty, fear, and pain. However, the situation around the virus has brought many good things on all levels and aspects of society. To mention a few:

  • Cleaner environment
  • No traffic jams and fewer car accidents
  • Parents are giving more attention to their children’s education
  • Family issues are coming to the surface
  • Deepened contact between parents and children
  • More than usual, elderly people talking on the phone with others
  • Beautiful initiatives to support people in need, and healthcare providers

There are also creative ways, often combined with humor, being invented for spending time at home, and for preventing further downfall of businesses.Read more

This week we’re doing something a bit different.

I live just outside Yellowstone National Park. According to park authorities, The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is home to about 700 grizzly bears, an endangered species.

I know there’s a lot of controversy in the United States today about endangered wildlife. I don’t intend to get into that controversy here. But I did want to talk about honoring Mother Earth and all life for whom she is home.Read more
