Savior of the World

Today, as you know, the Christian world celebrates Christmas, the birth of its savior, Jesus Christ. But what is a “savior?” Do you consider yourself a savior? Probably not.

“Only the voice of ego would see a difference of being the savior of the world and a street sweeper.” The Way of the Heart by Jayem

A few years ago we wrote a post about a real-life street sweeper, a man I knew from my childhood.

The Real Christmas

Our title today is taken from a story my son John wrote many years ago, when he was only 8 years old.

Spirit

Even though many of you are aware of the magic of Christmas, you’ve pretty much lost sight of the real Christmas. It’s become a commercialized farce, a parody of the real Christmas spirit.

It doesn’t matter how you celebrate this holiday season—with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Winter Solstice, Chinese New Year, etc. etc. Or even if you don’t celebrate the season at all. But I think most of us would agree this is the season to celebrate the spirit of love.

Because animals are naturally uninhibited, they express themselves far more clearly than most humans. This is particularly true when they demonstrate love for the humans in their lives.Read more

The Greatest Gift: An Alternative To War

Wisdom born of experience should tell us that war is obsolete. There may have been a time when war served as a negative good by preventing the spread and growth of an evil force . . . .If we assume that life is worth living, if we assume that mankind has the right to survive, then we must find an alternative to war. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr., The Christmas Sermon on Peace, December 24, 1967

Just A Dog

A good dog never dies, he always stays. He walks beside you on crisp autumn days when frost is on the fields and winter’s drawing near. His head is within our hand in his old way. ~ Mary Carolyn Davies, American writer

It was two days before Christmas many years ago, my senior year of college. In my parents’ home, I stood staring out the window at the gray winter landscape. The bleak scene mirrored my own inner bleakness. I felt none of the joy of the Christmas season.Read more

There are reminders of the holiday season all around us, no matter what we celebrate—Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, etc. Or you may not celebrate at all. Or for you it may not be “the season to be jolly,” Perhaps the opposite, for whatever reasons.

Our world is seemingly in a mess, and for personal or global reasons it can be a depressing time for many.Read more

One of our greatest joys in spirit is seeing humans celebrating, and just plain having fun.

Many of you are very good at that during this time in your linear calendar. But not always so good at it the rest of the year.Read more

Do You Struggle With the Holidays? by John Cali

David O. Selznick, the legendary Hollywood filmmaker, once said “I’m so depressed. Christmas is the worst of all. Holidays are terrible, worse than Sundays. I get melancholia.”

Some of my family and friends struggle with the holidays, particularly the winter holidays. (Or summer, if you’re in the southern hemisphere.) Like Scrooge and Selznick, they dread to see them coming each year—whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, etc. etc.

Aren’t we missing the whole point of the holiday season?Read more

Merry Christmas! Bah, Humbug! By John Cali

One of my all-time favorite movies is “A Christmas Carol,” based on Charles Dickens’ novel of the same name.

As you probably recall, in the book and movie Scrooge showed his disgust for Christmas with the words “Bah, humbug!” He believed Christmas was just an excuse to spend money you didn’t have and to waste precious time in revelry and fun. Certainly a cynical view of what is for many is a joyful celebration, and a time for putting aside our differences and being just a bit kinder to our fellow humans—and to all creatures.Read more

Do You Have a Hard Time Loving Yourself? John Cali

As we move deeper into the holiday season, I see more and more folks getting stressed and overwhelmed. That’s not what Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, etc. are all about. They’re about celebrating the season, one another, and ourselves.

Yet many folks put themselves at the end of their long holiday lists. They don’t take time to slow down and enjoy the season. In short, they have a hard time loving themselves in their frantic rush to get everything done.

Does that sound like you?Read more

That title is from an old Christmas song of the same name. Though I am no longer Christian, I love the song’s lyrics. They convey a positive, uplifting message of love and joy.

The song’s story is about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and their travels all over the world bringing a message of peace and joy to all who would listen. The story is clearly fictional, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is the message.

Here’s the heart of the message:

“With the wind in the willows and the birds in the sky, there’s a bright sun to warm us wherever we lie.… Read more

I don’t pay much attention to the mainstream news, though I do browse through it quickly now and then, just so I have some idea of what’s going on in the world. Though there’s a lot more going on in the world than what the news media publish, which is mostly “bad” news. There’s more good news than bad. But we rarely see it in the headlines.

I’m fascinated by the so-called “War on Christmas.” It seems to me our world is obsessed with war.… Read more
