Under The Hood

Back in my aviation days as a flight instructor, we had an expression, “Under the hood.” That was how we trained student pilots — we put them under a hood.

It was literally a hood they wore over their heads. The hood allowed them to see only straight ahead to the airplane’s instrument panel. It blocked out their peripheral vision. The only visual clues they had were the plane’s instruments. They were literally flying blind.

Death and Euthanasia

We realize death and euthanasia are are grim-sounding title. But Spirit’s words today are uplifting and joyful, despite the subject.

Someone Berna and I know died recently. He’d been sick a long time, and was in terrible pain. Voluntary euthanasia is legal where he lived. He chose to end his life.

We have long been advocates for euthanasia. That’s alienated some of my family—and perhaps also some of our readers.

You Are Miracle Workers

Amazing Animal Angels

I was wandering around a town in Northern Virginia, a town I lived in many years ago. The town was built around a man-made lake called Lake Anne. I was searching for the lake as I aimlessly wandered about.

There’s a saying you’ve probably heard, Seeing is believing.

But that’s not true, in our opinion. It’s the reverse: Believing is seeing.

Freedom For The Thought We Hate

Over the years I’ve been the target of occasional hate mail. That “goes with the territory” when you put yourself into the public eye. I’m sure any of you putting your work out to the world have had similar experiences.

When I was in college my major course was history, which I’ve always loved. One of my favorite historical figures was US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. He was an articulate speaker and writer. Here’s one of his quotations:
